Herbal Medicine
The most optimum way to treat chronic disease conditions is by looking at the animal as a whole and not simply treating them according to their symptoms. This philosophy underpins all traditional medicine systems and is called holism, or holistic medicine.
Holism recognises that all body systems are integrated to work in with one another and when all systems are working optimally the body keeps itself in balance and optimal healing can occur. When this balance is lost, disease can occur. The practise of herbal medicine allows us to use herbs that rebalance the body, resolve symptoms and treat the underlying causes of disease.
The underlying causes of disease stem from an animal’s genetics, their environment, physical and emotional stressors, unbalanced nutrition and exposure to toxins. Herbal medicine can help to mitigate the effect of these causes while improving nutrition and changing their lifestyle is also important.
Herbal medicine will optimise an animal’s healing, health and vitality over time.
Over the ages, it was recognised in traditional herbal medicine that various parts of plants were successful in treating different conditions. Now with scientific analysis we are able to identify the active constituents in these plants. In fact many drugs have been formulated based on these active constituents. The beauty in herbal medicine is that there are many active compounds in a plant that work synergistically to help a particular condition and they do this in a balanced and safe method. As herbalists we prefer to use the whole plant to make use of all this synergy and gentler rebalancing.

Herbal Medicine Alongside Conventional Medicine
Western herbal medicine can be used alongside conventional medicine when required. There are a few known herb-drug interactions that can occur and these are always taken account of in preparing a formula. Herbal medicine can have some advantages when used alongside conventional medicine such as:
- A reduction in the side effects of medication, such as with chemotherapy
- increased effectiveness of certain drugs
- Reduction in the dose of a drug, so that their side effects are lessened.
- Improved stimulation of the immune system for animals- an advantage for animals also taking antibiotics to clear an infection
There are some particular actions herbs possess that are unmatched with conventional medicine.
Herbs can offer adaptogenic and antioxidant actions which allow an animal to resist any form of stress so much better as well as increasing their overall energy. There are also many situations where an animal may be sensitive to drugs or has underlying organ damage which means they cannot be prescribed that drug. For many older animals non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may be contraindicated. Herbal medicine can be used to offer anti-inflammatory action for these animals and avoid the potential kidney and liver problems that can occur with the use of those drugs.
Herbal medicine has much to offer in the treatment of chronic conditions, especially where an animal may be developing a multitude of seemingly unrelated problems.
By taking a holistic approach to your dog or cat’s conditions(s) you can gain a greater understanding of the underlying cause(s) and provide them with a gentler, more balanced therapy that improves their overall vitality and well being.

“My dog Cindy started crying in pain a few months back. Got her on pain meds. Then she started stumbling when walking. Took her to my normal vet who said she probably has a brain tumour and might not last till Easter. Immediately I went onto FB and asked people if they knew of a Chinese doctor who looked after animals. Kym’s name was suggested. Kym diagnosed that Cindy probably had a stroke affecting her left side. So a treatment of acupuncture started, along with a herbal tonic Kym mixed herself, plus fish oil for Cindy’s brain. Cindy now walks without any stumbling and is naughtier than before. Kym also suggested medication for joints which I haven’t purchased yet, but once Cindy is on that medication I can take her off the pain meds. I don’t know what I would have done without Kym. So if you’ve got a sick animal needing specialised care please get in touch with Kym.“

“I was recommended to take my old girl Kiera to Acupet by a colleague.
That was a huge blessing as my dog would not be walking (and possibly put down) if it wasn’t for her acupuncture sessions, lazer and herbal medicine. For a 15 year old she is now thriving.
The results she has been receiving makes me realise you should never write off a pet just because they are old. Humans have the ability to support their elderly dogs and cats with natural treatments, that have them pain free and living their best lives.
Kym is a highly skilled, knowledgeable, professional vet who has our pets health as her top interest.”

“I have been taking my boy Frankie to Acupet for pet acupuncture and rehab since his surgery for IVDD January 2023. Kym’s knowledge and care is second to none, she looks at his overall health and wellbeing and helps you to form a plan of action. Frankie has had acupuncture, laser therapy and we have had multiple herbal medicines to assist his journey. He’s making great progress and this would not have been possible without Kym! Frankie and I love our sessions with you and I couldn’t recommend Acupet more highly!“
